History of Capiz

 

Capiz is the outer shell of a marine mollusk, whose scientific name is placuna placenta and can be found in the shallow coastal waters of the Philippines. Capiz shells are also known as windowpane oyster. These are being gathered from the muddy, shallow coastal waters and then dried to open the shells and remove the meat inside. Empty shells are soaked in freshwater and then scraped to produce the desired luster.


The natural shells of capiz are so thin as to be translucent and were also known as pearl oyster. It is said that these shells are first found on the Island of Capiz, located in the Western Visayas region. Its capital is Roxas City and is located at the northeastern portion of Panay Island, bordering Aklan and Antique to the west, and Iloilo to the south.


Known as one of the most versatile and elegant decorating raw materials, the Capiz shells are very important part of the culture of the local Capiznon. It is bread and butter source for many locals who engage in developing all sorts of designs for use as ornamental decoration in houses. The Capiz shells when used as ornaments and decors turn simple living into elegant and cozy-looking environment. It is well known to be a good indoor as well as outdoor decor major raw material. The Capiz shell does not contribute to reef formation as it is harvested from the ocean floor.


Capiz shells used to be the main material for windowpanes during Spanish era, today because of the translucent shells and extra-ordinary charm, these are more frequently seen made into lampshades, tablewares, windchimes, chandeliers, candle holders, jewelries and other decorative objects.


Now, these natural shells are being utilized as the latest trend in Architectural world.
